Prologue
Dark, alone, and uncertain—this was life for the frail five-year-old Phoenix twins. The news reports described their home as a roach-infested cage sealed in plastic, where they spent twenty hours of every day. While most children their age played tee-ball and video games, they remained caged like animals—unaware that there was another reality just outside their reach.
Oh, occasionally they enjoyed a respite from their prison when their mother allowed them to play outside for short periods. But those times were few and far between.
Night after night, day after day, they lay alone and uncertain. Who could they trust? Why were they being treated this way? Could they believe in anyone or anything? For them life held no certainty.
Such stories both horrify and incite us. We immediately identify with the plight of the two young children, unable to enjoy the freedom that should be theirs, forbidden the opportunity to grow and develop under the nurturing eyes of loving parents. We loathe the caregivers who abused them.
And yet, how many Christians choose to live a similar kind of existence? Many live as though God wants them to be fearful and uncertain of their eternal destiny.
Is this uncertainty necessary? The Bible answers with an emphatic No! Certainty that all who simply believe in Jesus are eternally secure can be found repeatedly in God’s Word. And when it is, fear of hell vanishes and gratitude explodes within. And with gratitude comes a desire to share this wonderful news with others.
But what about you?
Have you picked up this book because you’re unsure of your eternal standing with God and are searching for answers? Keep reading. I’ve been there and I share in this book the answers I’ve found over the course of thirty years of study on this key subject.
Or maybe you’ve received the gift of eternal life through faith in Christ, but you’ve lost the certainty you once had. Others have led you to believe that you need to look to your works to see if you measure up to what a “true Christian” should look like. When you look at your life, you feel it just doesn’t measure up to what it should be. You doubt your security because your works are imperfect. This book was written for you as well. You can regain the certainty that you once had.
Possibly you have no doubts. You’re certain you believe in Jesus and that you are secure forever. If so, this book explains Bible texts that are hard to understand and offers powerful motivations to stay sure and to share this message with others.
Secure and sure. That’s what I hope for each of you.
